Just 25 miles east of Columbia Glacier, the ice-free port of Valdez is the southern terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. Valdez first boomed when 4000 gold seekers passed through, heading for the Klondike. After the 1964 earthquake, the city was rebuilt 4 miles further east.

The Valdez Convention & Visitors Bureau (907-835-4636; www.valdezalaska.org; 200 Fairbanks Dr; 8am-7pm Mon-Sat, 9am-6pm Sun) has information about the area and courtesy phones to book accommodations. The library (907-835-4632; 212 Fairbanks St; 10am-6pm Mon & Fri, 10am-8pm Tue-Thu, noon-5pm Sat) has free internet access.
